About the Open Data for Good Grand Challenge 2021

The U.S. Census Bureau, U.S Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other partners are sponsoring the Open Data for Good Grand Challenge, a competition to help technologists and their collaborators better deploy data-driven products to end users, and reward exemplary uses of federal open data. $310,000 in prizes will be awarded.

What’s your role as a judge?

We’re seeking judges with subject matter expertise in following three categories:

Climate Resilience and Natural Environment

Society, Economy and the Built Environment

Health and COVID-19 Challenges

We’re seeking judges with subject matter expertise in following three categories:

Climate Resilience and Natural Environment

Society, Economy and the Built Environment

Health and COVID-19 Challenges

Teams applying for the Prize will submit a working digital product, along with brief documentation of their build process, collaborators, and plans for impact.

As a judge, you’ll spend no more than 8-9 hours of your time reviewing the technology products that are submitted to this challenge, and scoring them on 5 criteria: technical quality, use of federal open data, cross-sector collaboration, sustainability and implementation, and impact.

Scoring MUST be completed between November 1-9, so you must be available in that window to serve as a judge. Reviews can take place virtually and on your own time, but must be completed in this window.

You’ll need to complete a 1-hour training webinar on either of the following dates:
- Oct 12, 4:00-5:00 p.m. ET
- October 21, 2:30-3:30 p.m. ET
